Top Storylines Headed into the European Open
FPO LOOKAHEAD
FPO Feature Card #1: Kristin Tattar, Eveliina Salonen, Ella Hansen, & Paige Pierce
FPO Feature Card #2: Missy Gannon, Anniken Steen, Silva Saarinen, Amanda Lennartsson
Can Kristin Tattar Defend Her Title?
Kristin Tattar, the reigning champion of the European Open, is back to defend her crown. Tattar made history last year as the first European FPO player to win the European Open, and sheâs coming off a strong performance at Krokhol, where she secured a six-stroke victory with a 996-rated round. If she can defend her title, Tattar will join the elite club of back-to-back champions at this prestigious event, following in the footsteps of Paige Pierce, Catrina Allen, Valarie Jenkins, and Carrie Berlogar. Tattar has only 2 wins with 12 starts in Finland (2023 European Open, 2019 Helsinki). Previously, she played the European Open in 2017 (6th) and 2019 (5th) before becoming a force on tour and winning the Major as a part of her Grand Slam 2024 season.
Missy Gannon & Eveliina Salonen Try For A Double Major Season
Missy Gannon has been a force to be reckoned with this season, and she is currently leading the DGPT World Standings. She finished third at the 2023 European Open and won her first Major earlier this year in March at the USWDGC. If Gannon clinches the title at the European Open, she will become only the second FPO player, after Des Reading, to win her first two FPO Majors in the same year. Gannonâs consistent performance, with three Tour wins this season, sets the stage for a potentially historic victory.
Eveliina Salonen is another top contender, looking for her second Major win of the season after her triumph at the 2024 PDGA Champions Cup. Salonen has a strong track record at the European Open, including a second-place finish in 2022 and an impressive 1028-rated 59 on the same layout as MPO that year. That round two years ago, she beat many notable names, including:
- Wysocki, Makela, Proctor, Carlsson, Hammes, Gilbert (60)
- Heinanen, Semerad (62)Humphries, Barsby (63)
- Heimburg, Lizotte, Oakley, Conrad, Tamm (64)
With her extensive experience and success in Finland, Salonen is poised to challenge for the top spot once again. If she takes it down this week, it would be Salonenâs first season with two Major wins and her third overall Major title (2024 Champs Cup, 2018 Konopiste Open).
Paige Pierceâs Major Comeback Moment?
Paige Pierce, a three-time European Open champion, is making her return to this event after missing last yearâs competition due to an ankle injury. The 2022 European Open was Pierceâs last Major victory, and she is currently experiencing the longest Major drought of her career. With 17 Major wins to her name, Pierce remains a formidable competitor, and has the Pro Major stats to back it up:
- Starts: 39
- Wins: 17 â most in FPO
- Podiums: 28 â 2nd most in FPO
- Top 10s: 36 â 2nd most in FPO
Henna Blomroos and Heidi Laine: Home Turf Advantage
Henna Blomroos and Heidi Laine are two Finnish players to watch closely. Blomroos, with seven career FPO Major podiums to her name, is still seeking her first Major victory and has the most Major podiums without a win in FPO. Blomroos has consistently performed well at the European Open, with five top-five finishes in as many starts. Heidi Laine, who finished second at last yearâs European Open, has also found success on these courses, winning the 2023 Nokia Open and the 2022 Prodigy Disc Pro Tour â Tampere. Both players will leverage their local knowledge and experience to fight for the win.
MPO LOOKAHEAD
MPO Feature Card #1: Corey Ellis, Simon Lizotte, Niklas Anttila, & Gannon Buhr
MPO Feature Card #2: Anthony Barela, VÀinö MÀkelÀ, Chris Dickerson, & Eagle McMahon
Big Money Rickyâs Quest for His First Major Since 2017
(come on, we had to do it)
Ricky Wysocki, one of the most consistent and successful players on the tour, is seeking his first Major victory in seven years. Wysocki has been in excellent form recently, with two wins and four podiums in his last five Tour events. Moreover, he is just $592 behind Paul McBeth for the most cash earned ever. A win at the European Open could end his Major drought and catapult him to the top of the all-time earnings list.
ALL-TIME PDGA CASH LEADERS
Player | Career Cash Earned |
Paul McBeth | $753,135.09 |
Ricky Wysocki | $752,542.76 |
Barry Schultz | $447,627.10 |
Dave Feldberg | $440,167.58 |
Ken Climo | $438,630.32 |
Anthony Barelaâs Redemption Arc
Anthony Barelaâs performance at last yearâs European Open was one of the most talked-about moments, leading until a disastrous Hole 16 in the final round. Barela, who has four Tour wins this season, is the first player to win their first four DGPT events in a single season. Returning to The Beast, Barela is driven by the desire for redemption and to secure his first Major title. Itâs bound to be a show, so make sure you tune in.
Gannon Buhr Leading the DGPT Standings â Will He Hang On?
Gannon Buhr has been the most consistent player this season, leading the DGPT World Standings with only one missed top 10 in 14 Major/Elite Series starts. This will be Buhrâs first career start at the European Open. Known for his steady performances, Buhrâs adaptability to the challenging European courses will be a key factor this weekend. His performance at Krokhol last weekend, where he finished seventh in his first PDGA start outside the US, suggests he is ready for this challenge.
Niklas Anttila: Europeâs Best Hope
Niklas Anttila, the highest-rated European player, has been in excellent form with two Tour victories this season. Naturally, as a native of Kuopio, Finland, Anttila carries the hopes of the home crowd. The Finns may be in luck this year. Antillaâs consistency and safe play could make the difference in this tightly contested event, with every iteration of the European Open since moving to Nokia being won by two or fewer strokes. Will the young gun be able to take it home for Finland? If he can find the magic, he will be only the second-ever European MPO player to win the European Open (Jesper Lundmark won in 2009).
Paul McBethâs Return and Legacy
Paul McBeth, a five-time European Open champion, is returning after a DNF last year due to a shoulder injury. McBeth holds the record for most wins at the European Open (5-straight from â11 to â19) and has 17 career Major victories. A win here would tie him with Ken Climo for the most MPO Major titles and extend his legacy as one of the greatest disc golfers of all time. With his unparalleled Major win rate of 33.3% at Pro Majors, McBeth is always a formidable presence, and we know he loves playing at the Beast.
