Carlos Yulo breaks silence on feud with mom via Tiktok video (2024)

CARLOS Yulo has broken his silence on a longstanding family feud that became the talk of the town following his unprecedented double-gold conquest at the Paris Olympics.

Hours before Yulo competed in the men’s vault finals in Paris, his mother Angelica Yulo went public to flesh out the roots of their spat, ranging from his partner Chloe San Jose and the alleged mishandling of Yulo’s prize money.

In an interview with mediamen, the Yulo matriarch denied allegations that she spent the gymnastics star's incentives from victories overseas and allowances which were under her care to buy a house and other personal items.

But just a day after Yulo's father Mark raised hope for a reconciliation, Yulo, 24, took to popular social media platform TikTok with his partner by his side to answer point for point all the issues that her mother raised.

The seven-minute video sees Yulo going into detail on the issues about money which Angelica allegedly spent without his knowledge, much less permission, his mom's estranged relationship with Chloe, and other family matters.

Yulo said he failed to receive his incentives from the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships — one which, in his words, fell in the hands of her mother without his knowledge.

“May mga gusto lang po akong i-clarify doon sa mga interviews at mga sagot ng nanay ko po sa mga interviews niya po. Unang-una po, 2022 [world championships] po ‘yun at hindi lang po 70 thousand ‘yung na-receive ko po doon. Alam ko six digits po ‘yun dahil dalawa po yung nakukuha kong medalya,” said Yulo,

“After nu’n, mga bandang December, umuwi ako sa Pilipinas. Nagkikita kami ng mama ko at hindi niya sa akin sinisabi na na-receive niya na pala ‘yung incentives ko from World Championships. Hindi ko pa po malalaman na na-receive niya na pala ‘yung incentives ko from world championships.

“Hindi ko pa po malalaman na na-receive niya na po yung incentives ko kung hindi ko pa po hinanap.”

The Filipino gymnast said he never knew where all the money went.

“Never ko na po na-receive yung incentives ko po na yun. At never ko na rin naman po na hiningi yun sa kanila. Binigay ko na at wala na po yun sa akin. Ang sa akin lang naman, gusto ko malaman kung saan na punta ‘yung incentives ko po na ‘yan.

“‘Yung principle po kasi dito, wala po sa liit o laki ng amount po na incentives po na ginalaw niya, kundi po sa pagtago at paggalaw niya nang wala ko pong consent, yung pina-point ko po sa kanya.”

'Inubos n'ya po ang laman 'nun'

Yulo also pointed out that all of his bank accounts where his prize money and allowances from the Philippine Sports Commission as a national athlete go were held by his mother. And it was only upon recovering the account and retrieving the bank statements that he found out that such funds have already been withdrawn.

“Lahat po ng bank account ko po, nasa mama ko po. At may mga instances po talaga na si Chloe po yung sumasalo sa akin that time po. Bukod sa incentives po, nasa kanya din kasi ‘yung bank account ko sa monthly allowances sa pag-gymnastics ko.

“Nu’ng nakuha ko na yung bank account ko po na ‘yun, du'n ko po nalaman na inuubos niya po yung laman nun. And nasa akin po yung mga bank statement ng withdrawal po na ginagawa niya po.”

Mom vs girlfriend

Yulo also went into detail to discuss his mother's claim that his relationship with San Jose was the root cause of the feud.

Coming to the defense of his partner of four years, Yulo belied his mom’s claim over a training camp incident in Japan where she said the couple occupied a dormitory allotted for Yulo, his younger brother Eldrew, and national player Miguel Besana.

According to Yulo, there was no such agreement on restricting ‘outsiders’ from the Japan dormitory — hence, San Jose’s stay with him broke no rules. Yulo added San Jose was actually invited to be in the dormitory to begin with.

“Actually, invited po si Chloe ng former coach ko from Japan," said Yulo, pertaining to Munehiro Kugimiya, "nung SEA Games pa lang po sa Vietnam, sinabihan kami na invite mo na lang si Chloe sa Japan and du’n kayo mag-hang out.

“Usually, kapag magti-training camp kami, palaging naka-hotel. And miscommunicated ‘yun na doon pala sila sa akin na mag-i-stay. Hindi rin totoo na pagpunta nila du’n nung dalawang bata, dapat wala na si Chloe, kasi sabay-sabay silang pumunta du’n.”

His mom said she deemed the arrangement wrong, but Yulo was adamant that he and his partner won’t ever consider doing anything inappropriate in the presence of his younger brother.

“Hindi ko alam kung bakit ganun yung mga sinasabi niya. At ‘yung sinasabi niya po na nandu’n ‘yung dalawang bata po, ‘yung nakabalandra daw yung puwet [ni Chloe] po, bilang nakakatandang kapatid po, bilang boyfriend ni Chloe po, at bilang ate at kuya po, kami po, aalagaan po namin sila.

“Hindi namin po gagawin yung mga iniisip niya na gano'n ang dumi niya mag-isip at hindi appropriate yun para sa akin at disrespectful yun actually sa akin and kay Chloe po.“

Family tug-of-war

Yulo also swore his Australia-based girlfriend had no intention of taking him away from his family.

“Sabi niya pa na feeling niya daw nilalayo ako ni Chloe sa kanila. Unang-una po, months before nun, kasi uuwi ako parang three days mula nu’n, sinabihan ko na sila na mag-sspend time ako kay Chloe. Nagpunta kami sa Baguio, sinama ko si Chloe, nag-spend time kami. Nakikipaghalubilo naman po kami, hindi naman ako nilalayo ni Chloe."

In fact, both of their families already met, Yulo claimed.

“Nagkita po yung mama ko and 'yung family ni Chloe twice po. And then, yun, nag-uusap po sila," Yulo said.

When the relationship between Angelica Yulo and Chloe soured, a Facebook Messenger group chat was even created which included all the parties involved in a last-ditch bid to resolve the issue, San Jose claimed.

“And the last resort, my family made a group chat na kasama everybody involved because my family wanted to address kung ano yung issues ni mama towards me kasi marami na siyang pino-post [sa Facebook]," Chloe said.

“Even though my family knew na marami na siyang pina-post, my family still welcomed them, treated them with respect and with no judgment na pinaringgan nila yung side ng mom mo, what she had to say about me and our relationship. And then, after the group chat, she left, your mom left.”

“Wala siyang narinig anything from my family. May recent interview po kayo na kino-congratulate n'yo po ako. Kung genuine po talaga kayo, maraming-maraming salamat po. Ina-acknowledge ko po yung pagko-congratulate niyo sa akin.”

All is forgiven

Although he admitted that scars still remain, Yulo said she has forgiven his mom.

“Nagpa-flashback pa rin po talaga yung masasakit niyong sinabi sa akin. At yung mga hindi niyo pag-wish well sa akin. Tumatatak po yun sa akin talaga. Ang message ko po sa inyo na mag-heal kayo, mag-move on.

“Napatawad ko na kayo a long time ago po. At [sana] nasa maayos kayong kalagayan dyan lahat. Tigilan na po natin ito at i-celebrate na lang po natin yung mga ginawa po ng paghihirap, pagsasakripisyo ng bawat atletang Pilipino dito sa Olympics.”
