What is GIF limit? ›

GIF is a raster file format designed for relatively basic images that appear mainly on the internet. Each file can support up to 8 bits per pixel and can contain 256 indexed colors.

The GIF file format has a hard-coded limitation of 256 colors, so when you save or convert as GIF, it has an unavoidable loss of quality to the photo. If you want to save it in high quality, we recommend saving an image in video format.

Uploads are limited to 100MB, and 15 seconds (though we recommend no more than 6 seconds). We will automatically resize the GIF on upload for uses in various contexts of our sticker API. You must set the GIF to loop "forever" before exporting.

Animated PNG is a better choice for artists, due to its higher-quality color palette and transparency support. It not only looks better than GIF, which tends to be pixelated and grainy, but it also has a smaller file size. However, APNG still needs optimization and doesn't have as much support as GIF.

Testing across time allows for a higher rate of compression. GIFs are an average of 5-10 times larger than an efficiently encoded MP4 video. This difference in size means that GIFs waste a large amount of bandwidth and also load at a slower rate leading to a bad user experience.

The GIF format, with its lossless compression, stores the information of each frame without discarding any pixel data. This means that the more colors you use (and the more pixels are changing between frames), the larger the rendered GIF file will be.
